NO JOHN IT DOESN’T WORK.
But yeah this part is great, and the one bit of foreshadowing I appreciate is the song that preceedes this by half an hour. Because this is the one part of the episode I wasn’t 110% certain of.
The writing. It starts out so good, and with a healthy dose of not-quite-there potential. And then they start getting over-confident and sloppy and giving stuff away.
One of John’s first lines is, “The press will turn on you. They always do.” And that’s the main difference, the suprise they hinted at with the CCTV graffiti and whatnot. And there you go. Just couldn’t resist banking on overwhelming audience appreciation and enthrallment with your multi-layered plot. You had to go and fucking indulge in blatant foreshadowing. It could have been better than that…
(In which Gilligan watches the pilot of Sherlock, followed by 2.3. To be fair, it bothered me the first time I watched it.)
